Printmaking

The most popular prints to come out of Baker Lake that have had a lasting impression on the Inuit Art world are stone-cut stencil prints. “The special resistance that the stone provides gives a quality to the hard labour of cutting that communicates in the visual appeal and emotional quality of the printed line. Relief printing is one of the simplest and most direct of the various hand-printing processes employed by artists, and beyond the large flat slabs of stone, very little in the way of equipment is needed. This is obviously an advantage anywhere, but especially so in the North where shipping remains expensive and somewhat erratic.” (S.Butler, 2007)

The first print collection was released in 1970; subsequent collections have been released 1971–1990; 1995–1999; 2001; and 2007–2009.
